Before the bells fall silent
If the current mining plans do not change, Opolno-Zdrój will meet a sad fate. At least half of the former spa village will be demolished. The half-timbered house to the west of the park and the villa next door (Photo on pg. 157) will end up under bulldozers. And with them, the local school, and the villas in the adjacent street.
When it comes to the most expansive mining option, bulldozers will level virtually all the houses in the village to the ground. They will put an end to the existence of Opolno-Zdrój. The church bells, which ring out every Sunday at noon across the landscape as far as Uhelná and Václavice, will finally fall silent. Only the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary will remain as a memento by the road between Bogatynia and Zittau.
