Life beyond the wall
The “soft” option of demolishing Opolno-Zdrój actually means demolition of about half of the houses – those closer to the pit. The Polish branch of the international organization Greenpeace is seeking to have several of the houses listed on the national register of monuments to prevent their destruction. According to PGE’s plans, a noise barrier will be erected just outside the park. A more optimistic scenario paints a future for Opolno as a cut-in-half village, the remaining half of which will live behind a steel wall several meters high. The local football players and fans are lucky – the pitch might remain.
