The glorious era of Oppelsdorf
The glorious era of Oppelsdorf, until then a village of no importance, began in 1836. Unexpectedly, healing springs were discovered in a small coal quarry here. At first, they served only the locals, but the reputation of their healing effects quickly spread throughout the region. Thus began a spa period that lasted more than a century and brought unexpected prosperity to the town, attracting visitors from all over Saxony and Bohemia. The first spa was opened by none other than the former mine owner Gottlieb Apelt. The Carolabad Spa Hotel from 1877 achieved the greatest fame (Photo on pg. 133). Further evidence of the unprecedented and unexpected prosperity of the village is the once opulent and ornate “Villa Habsburg” in the same street, just a few houses away (Photo on pg 137, 140).
